A 30-Meter Sinkhole Suddenly Appears on Soccer Field, Swallowing Light Tower and Bench

A sinkhole approximately 30 meters in diameter has appeared at the Gordon Moore Park soccer field in Alton, Illinois, swallowing a section of the ground. Surveillance video footage shows the sinkhole opening up and quickly engulfing a bench and a light tower.

According to American media reports, the sinkhole, which measures about 30 meters wide and 9 meters deep, appeared suddenly on the 27th. Fortunately, no one was on the field at the time of the incident. The field manager said, “If there had been people, it could have been a disaster. It looks like a scene from a movie. It’s as if a bomb exploded.” The sinkhole appeared in the space between two soccer fields.

It is believed that the sinkhole was caused by an underground mine. A spokesperson for the mine stated, “Access to the soccer field is prohibited while inspections and repairs are being carried out.” A citizen who visited the stadium said, “I often come here with my three children. They want to play soccer, but it’s scary now.” Another visitor expressed disbelief, saying, “I can’t believe the video. I was planning to play pickleball here today,” and showed a shocked reaction.
